Mamie's Green Lay Down

As I said in the previous post, my plan is to make all my gifts this year, both for the adults and kids. I'm going to try to post a pic and maybe a tute on each one, or a link to where I found it. Almost all were from Pinterest and tweaked to fit my needs or the supplies I had on hand.

The first is something that Reid asked specifically for. I have a green silk quilt that was first Meg's. She got it for college and then passed it down to me. Our dog chewed the corner off and it became a little worn and torn. When I needed a pop of color on the end of my bed, I used part of it as the backing of a coverlet I put together with a piece of fabric Meg brought from Bali. I had been hoarding the fabric for years trying to figure out how to use it. It has been on the foot of my bed for about a year. Reid somehow discovered the coverlet and during naps, he insists on being covered with "Mamie's green lay down". I have to admit, that old silk feels wonderful. He asked Santa to bring a green Mamie Lay Down of his own, so I had to make one for him.

I had enought leftover quilt to do 2 small quilts for each of the kids. Joann had some cute cotton that matched the green of the quilt. I used this tutorial from Tea Rose Home to do a self binding backing to the quilt.

quilt for child made with repurposed blanket and self binding
Cute, huh?

I started with the easiest so I would feel good about myself :). Tomorrow, something with a few more steps.
