Time for the yearly NYC trip review! This year we only had 10, down from the 13 last year, but had visitors in and out, so it was a full house. We also had 4 mother/daughter sets. My friends Janet and Shari came with us. I worked with Shari until she retired and then worked with Janet, who took her place. We've done NY together before and it's great to go with someone who "gets it" the same way as you. Lori came again this year and her daughter, Hanna, was flying back from her job teaching in Spain and made a pit stop with us. I have also been to NY with Hanna before, when she was a Jr in high school and dating my son. Our family came up to move Meg back to school and brought her along. One of my all time favorite trips to the city. Cindi and Cass came again this year. I almost can't do NY without them! The best mother/daughter duo was my mom and me. I convinced her to join us at the last minute and I'm so glad I did. We pounded the pavement for 5 days, eating everything we could and cramming in 4 shows, the Brooklyn Botanical Garden, The Hi Line Park (which was GREAT), hot dogs, Middle Eastern, tapas, soul food, Japanese food, Italian food, Chinese food, tarts, chocolate and pizza.
I use my iphone to do a lot of pictures of the baby. I never really thought about how handy it would be to document my time with my mom. Everyone thinks about how fast babies grow and you don't want to miss anything cute that they do, but I don't think I've ever really thought in terms of how quickly time passes. And, at 78, how every trip, everyday, might be the last time I'll have my mom the way I remember her. So even though I didn't plan it that way, this trip was for her to enjoy the city, and for me to savor her.
The trip became kinda like a "where's Waldo", but with Memaw.
She was a hoot taking in all the sites. We walked and rode the subway the whole time. Never had to grab a cab, a first time for me!

The Hi Line Park was recently opened and built on old elevated tracks that hadn't been used in years. As dirt and seeds were deposited on the tracks, things began to grow. Noticing the potential of added real estate for people to enjoy, the area was reclaimed, spruced up and replanted. I've tried to get by and see it the last few years, but this was the first time it fit into my plans. So worth it! I can't even tell you what a lovely place it was, perched above the busy streets all abloom and people relaxing and milling around. Loved it!
This is a before picture taken of a billboard near the park.
Here it is now.
Wouldn't you love to live here overlooking the park?
It was a great trip. We even made it out coming and going on stand-by. I can't wait for next year! Wonder who'll be coming?
