The Trip: Day 2 and 3

We left the cold of Oregon and woke up in sunny California the 2nd morning. Not a good thing since we don’t have air conditioning in our car. We kinda thought that would hold off til we were on our way to Vegas. Oh well, maybe all the weight I’m gaining from the food stops will melt off in the sauna of a car. Our plan was to make it to Napa Valley, do a wine tasting and picnic and then maybe drive over to Sonoma to tour a cheese factory. All that was thrown out the window when I figured out there was an In N Out on our way and then we saw an outlet mall across the street from it. The boys were more excited than I was. We did picnic with our burgers under a tree in the parking lot of the mall. Ha! Why is picnicking on the side of the road so, so cool in France and so tacky in the US? Ponder that for a moment…

Anyway, after a few hours of shopping, we finally made it to our hotel outside of San Francisco. Kenny, B and I drove into the city and acted like crazy tourists, hanging out our sunroof taking pictures of the Golden Gate Bridge. You don’t get good pictures worried about what the world thinks! We went to Chinatown and found this bakery that I wanted to go to for custard. They have the BEST custard tarts. We bought a few and then had to get some cheap souvenir coats because we were freezing. We walked around North Beach and ate at an Italian place, did a little book shopping and drove back. Pooped.

The next morning, it was back to SF for a tasting tour of Little Italy. We stopped at 5 different places and tasted everything from artisanal chocolate truffles to sausages. I think that some folks are just too shy. When they bring out stuff to taste and there is more than enough, why do you feel like you need to say you don’t need anymore or don’t want it? Is it rude to grab a sack and sweep all the leftover cookies and bread into a bag when no one else wants them? I didn’t think so. We picked up some sausage from an Italian deli and that, with the leftovers and the cherries we bought on the side of the road made a great picnic that evening.

We did the usual tourist things, pics by the GG Bridge and driving down Lombard St. then headed out to Sequoia National Park. Quite a change from SF! Very cool temps, even snow on the ground. It was really beautiful. The trees were unbelievably large. After walking around a bit, we had a picnic, along with several deer and then started the drive to the next hotel. Next stop, Las Vegas!
