Design on a Dime: Reid's Room

IMG_0248

I'm finally getting around to posting about the house and the sorta end result of all of our work. Although the bedrooms didn't need any work, all were or will be, redone. Instead of putting Reid in the nursery, Meg decided to go ahead and make a big boy room for him so he wouldn't have to transition twice.

He loves anything with wheels so she wanted to do a room with a car theme without it being too "theme-y". Something that he can grow with if he decides he doesn't like cars anymore. And she didn't want to spend much money. Lucky for her, we had enough stuff in the attic and garage to fit the bill. What we didn't have, we found at garage sales or outlets.

Reid's bed belonged to Bon Bon. He wasn't using it since he's living with us, so we moved it down there. We turned the bed around and used the headboard as a footboard and went to the junkyard for hubcaps to use as the headboard.

I had a couple of quilts that we were able to use as bedspreads and I made the pillow shams from old work shirts that I got at a used clothing store.
The curtains were made from a duvet I found on the clearance rack at Pottery Barn Outlet.

I took some photos at a classic car show and used them to make a grouping of metallic prints. The doodads (yum, remember those snack crackers called doodads? I wonder if they still make them) on the shelves are antique car thingys that we bought from a family who will be on American Pickers this fall. They had a great garage sale in our neighborhood.

The rug is a mat for a garage floor and the seat back came from B's room.

We also found some old maps at the garage sale. We didn't know what we wanted to do with them, but really liked them so thought we would figure it out later. Meg decided what we needed to do was wallpaper with them, how hard can that be?

The great thing about the maps is that we found one with Texas, and one with the state in which Reid was born, Washington. We also had one with Philadelphia, New York, and upstate New York on it, all places his parents went to college and two others with Ft. Worth, where Reid lived with us, and San Antonio, where he lives now. I really love how it turned out.

For storage, I bought a tool chest to use as a dresser.

I wanted metallic looking letters for his room, so I bought cardboard letters from Joann and spray painted them with metallic spray paint.
We were pleased with the result and Reid loves his new room. When people come to visit, he will lead them back to show his room. He spends hours back there, looking at books and playing with his trucks.

  2. Thanks, Jaime! They are from the inside of an old car, pre-airconditioning! The were mounted above the windshield, I think.
